Sir Winston Spencer Churchill Memorial Fund

The Sir Winston Spencer Churchill Memorial Fund sponsors the Churchill Communication Challenge which is an essay competition open to students studying History, Political Science and International Relations at British Columbia universities and regional colleges. The Memorial Fund encourages young people to look to Churchill as their role model for leadership in today’s changing and complex world. It is said that Churchill was the greatest practitioner of statecraft in the last century. Churchill was “a man of quality” as his biographer Martin Gilbert wrote and “a good guide for our troubled times and for the generations now reaching adulthood”. The Society’s Scholarship Committee selects essays from the submissions received and delivers scholarship awards to the chosen authors.

The Memorial Fund stands at approximately $45,800 as of September 30, 2007 and provided $1,500 to the first prize winner and $750 to the second prize winner in November, 2007.

Memorial Fund Donations

The Sir Winston Spencer Churchill Memorial Fund is fully funded by the Society, is administered by the Vancouver Foundation and is qualified for tax exempt status under the Income Tax Act.

Your donation to the Memorial Fund will underline your commitment to the great goals to which Churchill dedicated his life — liberty and democracy — and will enhance the ability of the Society to accomplish its purpose as set out in its Memorandum of Incorporation:

“to procure the advancement of education and without restricting the generality of the foregoing, to provide educational scholarships, bursaries, prizes and awards, and to carry out these purposes in such a manner as to perpetuate the memory of The Right Honourable Sir Winston Churchill”
